The Pros and Cons of Writing with a Pen Name

Choosing to write under a pen name is a decision many authors face. Whether to protect privacy, create a distinct brand, or explore different genres, using a pseudonym can shape an author's career in unique ways. Why Writers Choose Pen Names

Authors adopt pen names for various reasons. Some want to separate their personal and professional lives, while others seek to avoid bias or judgment based on their real identity. Back when I first started writing, I was talked out of using a Pen Name, and even now I still get questions about why I switched after all these years.

The Argument against using Pen Names

People know your name

This is the most common one you stumble across. The Argument is that people know your name and therefore marketing to that is easier, because your name already carries some weight. Especially among your close circle of friends, family, and acquaintances.

While I don't argue that fact at all. 90 % of the people that you're marketing to have never heard of you. That's who you're trying to reach, and they have no clue what your name is.

(And in my experience, friends and family are generally the worst customers because most want the book for free and never want to leave a review even if they did read the book.)

It's completely up to you

In the end, this is a matter of preference and not a matter that needs to be fought from one side or the other. I switched names for privacy because sometimes your last name is not that marketable.

In my case, if you constantly have to tell people how to spell or pronounce it? I think it's okay to change it.
